Aim of project

The general objective of this project is the development of MSMEs and entrepreneurship in the sheep farming sector in Tunisia and Italy. Creating MSMEs and jobs requires skills, tools, a supportive environment and a regulatory framework; these different parameters constitute the specific objective of the JESMED project.

In addition to contributing to the development of MSMEs and local economic operators on both shores, the JESMED project also aims to preserve biodiversity and promote local products, thanks to the planned achievements that will constitute a fundamental tool for this development.

The two cross-border areas suffer from a relatively high unemployment rate, which is at the origin of critical social situations, illegal immigration and a difficult economic situation. The project actions will consolidate existing economic structures and create know-how and opportunities for new economic entities (MSMEs).

The current situation in the cross-border area is characterised by the absence of economic clusters and weakness of the entrepreneurial fabric in the sheep meat supply chain, marked by the lack of infrastructure and know-how in the field of slaughtering, cutting, reference parameters relating to the establishment of labels, certification and control, as well as the organisation of clusters.

The enhancement of local genetic resources, in this case the Noir de Thibar sheep breed, the indigenous traditions linked to the use of this breed and to local culinary traditions, will help to preserve the environment and heritage by creating economic opportunities throughout the cross-border area. The support of the project to the Group of Northern Sheep Breeders, an example of successful organisation in the sector, and the development of a technical package and organisational tools that will be enhanced by other economic operators from both countries of the cross-border area, satisfy the objectives described above and contribute to solving the mentioned problems. The creation of a SMSA operating according to the cooperative model will constitute a reliable operator for the collective management of the activities of the NT-labelled meat production chain. This model is encouraged by the Ministry of Agriculture and will benefit from the support of all structures involved in the agricultural and livestock sector.
