Project Summary

The "Noir de Thibar" (NT) sheep breed is a local breed present in various regions of northern Tunisia created by the White Fathers in 1911, who began a series of crossings of western Tunisian "Fine tail" sheep with Italian black rams of the Merino breed. The result of these crossings was the creation of a new breed: the "Noir de Thibar". Several indicators are in favour of this sheep breed, such as growth potential, slaughter yield, low fat content, and it’s highly appreciated by both farmers and consumers.

The JESMED project aims to support entrepreneurship in the sheep farming sector in Tunisia and Italy by improving management methods and enhancing the quality and specificity of its products. Thanks to the experience of the Italian and Tunisian partners, to the evaluation of the nutritional and sensory characteristics of the products, to the establishment of traceability, certification and control systems for the products themselves, the JESMED project will be able to achieve the enhancement of suckling lamb and light Sicilian lamb meat and Halal meat, the creation of operators for the certification and quality control, the stipulation of marketing contracts and the promotion of ecotourism connected to the places of production.
